2008 Frosh Jersey Assignments

The jersey assignments for the incoming freshmen were announced last week:

# 1 CB T.J. Bryant (shared with WR Patrick Turner)
# 8 DE Nick Perry (shared with WR Ronald Johnson)
#10 WR D.J. Shoemate (shared with LB Brian Cushing)
#19 S Drew McAllister
#22 RB Curtis McNeal
#23 S Shane Horton
#30 CB Brian Baucham
#35 LB Unoa Kavienga
#51 LB Maurice Simmons
#66 OL Matt Meyers (who participated in spring practice)
#69 OL Daniel Campbell
#70 OL Tyron Smith
#75 OL Matt Kalil
#78 OL Khaled Holmes
#83 WR Brice Butler
#89 TE Blake Ayles
#91 DT Jurrell Casey
#94 DT Armond Armstead
#96 DE Wes Horton
#97 DE Malik Jackson

I found it interesting that Coach Carroll allowed Nick Perry to wear his high school number (#8) as a defensive end. The last time Coach Carroll allowed something like that was with 2003 recruit Chris Barrett (also a defensive end) who was allowed to initially wear his high school #9. Barrett wore #9 in 2003 and 2004 but switched to #91 in 2005.

You hear that Nick Perry!? You had better develop into the nasty edge rusher that Pete thinks you can become or else you'll get the Barrett Treatment and you'll be wearing 81 instead of 8.

I think Perry can do it though. He and Griffen should make for a pretty devastating duo in 2009.

Scott - looking ahead to the recruits verbally committed to the 2009 class so far, do you see any number issues when they arrive?

Interesting that Nick Perry wore 8 in HS. I thought he chose 8 to join his fellow Michigan native Ronald Johnson. No matter what side of the ball, if a 8 jersey makes a play, you can thank the state of Michigan.

P.S. Other first thoughts:

-McNeal at 22 sounds perfect considering he is similar in stature and role to fan-fave Desmond Reed.

-I love T.J. Bryant's 1. Maybe it's just me, but there's a certain attitude to that. You can't wear 1 and expect to be lost in the crowd, right?

-So I suppose Danelo's 19 will be worn. When Ausberry changed his number to 9 following the tragedy I thought the staff would keep the number as Danelo's.
